Are you searching for an easy way to transfer your unique designs and artwork onto t-shirts, hats, bags, or other fabrics? If so, you may have heard of a printing process called screen print transfers. Screen print transfers are a simple way to take your creative ideas from the drawing board and place them directly onto all sorts of materials that can be worn or used for just about any purpose.

In this article, we will go over what exactly screen print transfers are and how to do it yourself at home! We’ll discuss everything from preparation methods to basic printing techniques, so you’re ready with the skills to make professional-looking custom prints in no time!

How Does Screen Printing Transfer Work?

Screen printing transfer is an innovative way of creating unique and custom prints on fabric. It starts with a design transferred onto a tightly stretched piece of cloth called a screen. The ink colour is chosen, and then depressions on the screen are filled with it. Then, pressure is applied with a squeegee to force the ink through the open areas and create the desired pattern on the substrate below.

This process results in high-quality, durable prints with fantastic vibrancy and detail. Screen printing transfers can be used to create anything from simple t-shirts to complex murals, each one sure to turn heads!

Essential Tools for Screen Print Transfer

Screen Printing Frame

The screen printing frame is one of the necessary items when the design is set at the initial stage. The designs are done over a mesh screen.

Mesh

As mentioned earlier, mesh fabric is used to create screen printing designs. The mesh count used in screen printing is from 25 to 305 mesh. It is attached tightly to the screen frame for the best screen printing result. The lower the mesh count, the higher the ink flow through it.

Squeegee

The squeegee is made with a very firm rubber blade attached to the metal or wooden handle. The squeegee size should be smaller than your screen so that you can easily pull your colour over the screen to get a clean print.

Screen Printing Inks

In the case of ink choice, you can choose water-based acrylic or oil-based plastisol inks. When you use water-based ink, the initial task will be mixing the colour with a textile medium, which results in the paint being permanent. Besides, there are ready-mixed fabric paints available. Those are easier, to begin with.

Spatulas

Spatulas are used for putting ink over the screen and the rest of the ink inside the pot after applying. It makes it easier to remain the ink reusable without wasting ink.

Fabric

Fabric is the main element to print you design. In that case you should always use cotton or cotton blend for screen printing. Avoid novelty fabrics such as faux fur cause it is not suitable for screen printing.

The Screen Printing Process

Step 1: Design Creation

Creating a beautiful screen printing design is easier than you think! All it takes is a bit of imagination, a good sense of art, and knowledge of the fundamentals of the process.

First, you must decide what to put on your design; this could be something from nature or an abstract shape. Once you figure that out, plan how to make it come to life! After selecting the materials, start printing to represent your design visually.

Step 2: Screen Preparation

Screen printing is a great way to put a custom design on any item, but knowing how to properly prepare the screen if you want your design to turn out perfectly is essential. First of all, wash the screen with warm water and mild soap. This will remove any dirt that might have been left behind from previous printing operations.

Next, you’ll need to coat the screen with a thin layer of photo-emulsion or screen filler and let it dry in an area without direct sunlight or bright lights.

Step 3: Exposed Emulsion

Once the screen is dry, place your pre-printed design onto the screen using a light source such as UV from the sun or an exposure unit. Besides, you can create your own exposure unit. Generally, exposing emulsion times start from 5 minutes. But it relies on the thickness of your ink coat and light.

Step 4: Wash Emulsion and Create the Stencil

Finally, rinse the screen with cold water and carefully peel off your image, which should be ready for printing. With these steps in mind, you can create high-quality prints using screen printing for any project!

Step 5: Transfer Your Screen Design

At the last stage, it’s time to transfer your screen design. To proceed, you have to place your object under the screen frame. Now apply the ink through a squeegee by pulling it on. It should cover the area of your design.

Now you have to use a heat press machine to cure the ink of the object. Therefore you have to use heat between 270-330 degrees according to the ink used. When you don’t have a heat press machine, you may use an iron to cure your ink, but it will not give you the best result.
